Our Mission - To optimize the health and aging of individuals, community, and society through research, education, and public service in the social, behavioral and policy sciences.

Between 2000 and 2030, the number of Americans aged 65 and older will double to 70 million. During this same period, the population 85 and older is expected to grow faster than any other age group.

The aging of the American population is one of the most important demographic shifts in this century, which will have profound, but uncertain effects on the health and well-being of our citizens. The Institute for Health & Aging (IHA) faces the challenges of an aging society through research, education, and community service, and fills an important niche in the academic community as one of the premier health and aging research units in the world. Our faculty are internationally recognized experts, who represent multiple disciplines and health professions including anthropology, epidemiology, health economics, law, medicine, nursing, public health, pharmacology, psychology, social welfare, sociology, and statistics.
