The Stanford Geriatric Education Center provides a variety of ethnogeriatric programs and curriculum resource materials to educate health care professionals on the cultural issues associated with aging and health. The SGEC promotes cultural sensitivity and cultural competence to improve the quality of health care delivered to the rapidly growing population of ethnic minority elders in the United States.

Funded continuously since 1987 by the Bureau of Health Professions, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the original core faculty members of the SGEC coined the word '€œethnogeriatrics'€. The SGEC is currently a cooperative project between Stanford University School of Medicine, San Jose State University, On Lok Senior Health Services, Laguna Honda Hospital, and Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley, Inc.

About the SGEC

The SGEC is a federally-funded consortium of the Stanford University School of Medicine, San Jose State University, On Lok Senior Health Services, Laguna Honda Hospital, and Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley, Inc. It includes a multidisciplinary Affiliated Core Faculty and Faculty Associates from a number of community colleges, universities, and community-based organizations.

The SGEC service region includes ten California counties--Alameda, Merced, Monterey, Napa, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Solano.

Targeted disciplines include: Health education, medicine, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, optometry, pastoral care, physical therapy, psychology, and social work.
