The CAC Office on Aging is a public nonprofit agency that was created in Knox County in 1976. Its mission is to assist older persons to maintain the highest possible level of independence and avoid unnecessary institutionalization. We are charged with serving all seniors, regardless of life situation, but are mandated to concentrate on those for whom aging often presents the greatest hardship: the frail, the poor, and the minority old.
Major responsibilities include
*Assessing needs of older citizens and developing resources to meet those needs
*Coordinating services for the elderly (whether provided by public, nonprofit, or for-profit organizations) to minimize duplication and avoid overlap
*Providing information about services and programs to older citizens and their families and connecting them to those services
*Advocating on behalf of older citizens
*Providing services for senior citizens.
The Office on Aging also publishes the Service Directory for Older Citizens, a guide to community resources for senior citizens and the professionals and family members who provide care and services for them
